The Final Frontier: Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained (OOC)
This concept is pretty simple. It's a science-fiction RP which takes place in space (and on various worlds). I like adventure, and I've been wanting a good sci-fi adventure RP for some time now. Luckily for me I've found two capable writers (with better writing skill than I, in fact!) to do this with.
I plan to use the same mini-plot formula as the One Piece RP. That is, each character's writer designs a plot for them. But, I want there to be a main "umbrella plot" as well. Similar to Star Wars where there is the big picture (Republic-Separatist War), and smaller yet important plots like the Jedi-Sith conflict. I have a couple big picture ideas, but as always, I want input.
I like mysteries and lost civilisations. There is a detective RP but it's inactive. One scenario we can do is a group of however many characters (though I think we can only handle one given how busy we all are) end up trying to discover the truth about a species that lived long ago. Could be on some "they're too close to the truth, kill them!"
Another? We could do something where our characters were caught up in some bad affairs somehow, and zip around the stars meeting races, making friends (and enemies) while trying to clear their names.
I'm sure you both will come up with something. I made a character template. Let me know what you think about it while we brainstorm a plot. Like I said, it'll be different than the One Piece RP in that there is an umbrella plot that unites our characters, giving them a common goal more or less.
Is there a strikethrough code for the forum? I haven't seen it anywhere if there is. Something else I forgot to mention. I want y'all to create things to place into this RP. It's about space. The possibilities are endless! From isolated worlds to intergalactic factions to other dimensions. Go crazy!

What is the tone of this genre? Is it more like Cowboy Bebop, Guardians of the Galaxy, Firefly, Star Wars, Star Trek, or something entirely different?
Basically, are you going for a straight up scifi or do you want the scifi world to have a 'retro' feeling of a different time period?

Wasn't this supposed to be a post apocalyptic world kind of thing? Or am I thinking of a different idea that you had? Not that I'm complaining, this is interesting as well.
Nevermind, I found that thread. Sorry, I didn't even know this was posted (at all or a month ago)
There is a lot you can do with science fiction and space. I mean, do you intend for this to be from our universe? Would the plot/story be involved with the Earth or our solar system?
For example, (I don't know if you've ever played Phantasy Star Online) but at the beginning of the story it explains that three worlds close by, were ravaged by war and neglect. In a last ditch effort, two enormous space fleets were created. Pioneer 1 and 2.
#1 Was full of scientists, the military, all the important figures. They went out into deep space to find the perfect world for the three worlds to call their new home. Several years later, Pioneer 2 with the civilians enter this new planet called Ragol, where #1 was working to make it habitable.
However, there are no signs of #1. Their equipment, installations, and construction are found, but there isn't any trace of humanity. It's as if they disappeared. The story revolves around a hired guildsman to find out what happened to the population of #1.

As this is still very much in the concept phase, we can toss ideas around. I was going for something original, but there can be homages and influences as well. That's the thing about this RP -- I designed it to be eclectic. We could have many influences while putting our own spin on it. Has anyone here seen Dune? I would ask about Star Wars, but I know the answer to that.

I don't necessarily mean copying stories. I was just throwing another theme out there that we could think of/use and or combine with another idea or so forth.
I'd actually have to get back to you on this one, if you want all of our input to make the story. Sometimes my ideas come over time and not immediately when I'm sitting near the screen.

I'll wait then. I'm not really 1984 with my RPs, which is one of the ways you and I differ. I'm a more hands-off, creative license, flexible GM. I know what it's like to work with limiting staff-people and it ain't fun. Many good forums have died because of 'em. So take your time with the ideas. No rush over here.

Re: The Final Frontier: Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained (OOC)
I personally would prefer a retro style version of space but I would want to do a time era that hasn't really been done yet. I mean, there's been western, jazz-era, 80s done so far that I am aware of.

Re: The Final Frontier: Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained (OOC)
I think the 50s have been done as well. It sucks that almost everything has been done. Even cyberpunk and other -punk genres that I didn't know had names. Well, we could always make this a -punk RP. Especially since I like 'em all. My favourites being cyber and . . . bio? I'll get back to you on that one! I dunno if you're familiar with the punk scene. I'd say it's open-ended, eclectic while being flexible enough to work with. Meaning: You can get your retro fix! You're going to have to help me along with that though, because I admit to being ignorant about retro space. Can you show me any works that it has been done in?

Re: The Final Frontier: Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained (OOC)
Well there could be a civil war taking place just saying :p
As for examples, I already gave the retro ones that I am most aware of.

Re: The Final Frontier: Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained (OOC)
Now that we have our aesthetic/style, let's talk about story. I would say exploration, but that's already the One Piece RP. Exploration will be apart of it, obviously. Gotta travel to planets and shiz. I think I said this before, but one possible scenario is a group of peo . . . beings that got caught up in some stuff and teamed up to clear their names while answering questions like: "Who set us up?" And of course, "Why?" Basic ideas, but I'm giving y'all something to run with. Like I said, no dictator here.

Re: The Final Frontier: Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained (OOC)
I don't know. Kind of feels like we're all throwing skeleton plots around and hoping someone else will make the story.

Neither do I really. My first thought keeps going to asteroid belts. Or a asteroid or belt coal mining facility.

I thought you said you had some ideas or would, then we'd mish-mash 'em and see what we could come up with.

Re: The Final Frontier: Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained (OOC)
That actually doesn't sound as bad as what I was thinking which was mostly just clips from Guardians of the Galaxy with no creative input whatsoever in them :p
coal mining facility could be a cool location.

Then that means my mystery/political intrigue idea is the only one currently on the table. Consensus on how everyone feels about that, please. You gotta like the story, otherwise you won't RP. I know how it works. XD

I still need to see that movie, on top of a huge list of others. I'll probably catch it when it comes out on dvd via the library or something.
