I really think it depends on the tone of voice a person uses and the actual person. I love dogs so I don't think I'd see it as an insult =p. Though I can see how it may be insulting.

When I said in a playful manner, I was thinking of Tsubasa Chronicles where Fai calls Kurgy and Sharon "Big Doggy" and "Little Doggy".....

Even that sounds a little insulting, no offense. Though I mainly meant when the word is used in a sentence like "Know where you stand, you dog." and the person might be addressing another human.

^ I know that's what you were talking about and I can understand that being an insult. that's why i said it depends on your tone...i mostly meant it in a playful manner as i said. where it's more of a joke or to indicate a person is acting like a cute dog...or puppy. whichever. you know....like when kids crawl around the house and pretend to be dogs.....
