Yard Sales
So do you or your family ever go to yard sales? The thing I like the most about them is that you never know what you're going to find in them. I'm usually one to have a set mind what I'm looking for, old games or old Nintendo Power magazines, for collection purposes (if the price is right)
I hardly ever find any of those, old NES or old magazines. Normally I find one here or there, like with a very old issue of Nintendo Power, the 13th to be exact. Had all the pages and everything, which was cool. One time I found a box with an NES and a bunch of games.
I was browsing through the whole thing and the guy who owns it says, whole box five bucks lol. I bought it immediately. I don't know if this guy was a crook in his earlier years, because a lot of the NES games had a video store sticker on them. Anyway it had all sorts of games, Zelda, Mario, even ones I've never heard of, the Zapper, and everything.
Normally I'm not that lucky with yardsales regarding either the old games or magazines, but I went browsing through a huge flea market earlier today after work. They normally hold it and I figured I'd try to find some, even if it was a next to impossible search.
I found an old Civil War pistol holster, it was a replica of course, but it was made out of thick leather and in good condition. It would normally run around $40 or more, but I got it for five bucks. The leather itself would probably cost that much if not more.
Although I'm not an officer and probably never will be, I couldn't pass up an offer like that. So do you got any yard sale tales to tell? Anything you found that you liked? A really good steal?

Re: Yard Sales
We go to yard sales all the time. I love looking for things. I also go to antique stores...there's one in my area where usually, you're buying stuff for a real bargain. I usually get books or Disney related things. that's what's been happening lately.
the one time I got a real steal that I remember is the Art of Animation from Mickey Mouse to Beauty and the Beast for like two dollars. it came in handy when I had to do a research paper on musicals :D
i know there's been a couple of other instances but i just cant remember them at the moment.

So you usually go searching for Disney stuff? I go looking for anything Civil War related, old games, old Nintendo Power magazines, and leather based stuff. Like the holster I found.
I once found a real army helmet used in WW2, but the guy wanted over $500 for it. I'm sorry that is a valuable relic, but don't be selling it at a yard sale. I don't understand people who try to sell relics at them, just go sell them at a pawn or antique based store.
I also get a kick out of the crazy prices of old people. They don't know how to price things, they're like kids when they were too young to be reasonable with pricing.

Re: Yard Sales
Okay so the library was giving away a whole bunch of books and I managed to get 5 volumes of FMA for under a dollar. It was pretty sweet.
Then at one of the antiques stores, I found a really good copy of a book about the Phantom of the Opera broadway production.
And then I saw some old Disney comics and got two of those.
The end =p.
they also still had a blow gun or something carved in the shape of a dragon...but it was very expensive x_x

Re: Yard Sales
I found some smooth skinned fur at the reenactment yesterday. It was pretty cheap to and I liked the texture. I might use it for something regarding reenacting or costume design (without actually tampering it in any way.)
I also found these tough leather gaiters, pretty cheap to. So I bought them. Cheap as in cheap for those types of things. To make them myself would take months.

Re: Yard Sales
Well hey you got a pretty good steal to. Several movies for a buck each, and Animes to boot. Animes are so damn expensive.

Re: Yard Sales
That's true, but I never really bothered getting any of the comics. I only bought a few of the first chapters of Naruto and One Piece. Kinda stopped after that on account that I had already seen it animated in the Anime.
There were a few things that I did learn. Like Luffy got his scar by cutting himself. They showed that in the very beginning of the first few pages. He wanted to be part of Shank's crew, but they refused him. So to make him seem big and tough to take along, he stabbed himself with a knife in front of them.

Re: Yard Sales
i like reading the manga because it's the original source material and im just curious to know what was originally intended. especially since a lot of series diverge away from the manga and create their own endings. or they never finish the manga's storyline.

Re: Yard Sales
Meh after watching it animated, I can't get into it as much. It's not that it's moving and flashy, but a little of everything. Especially the voice actors, who bring it to life.

Re: Yard Sales
lately, ive been reading the manga first.
sometimes though i dont even both with the anime because the anime takes away some of the art of the manga. Bakuman was like that...the anime art wasn't as good as the manga art so i didnt get very far with that show.

Re: Yard Sales
I kept forgetting to mention this but here are some things I mentioned to get recently:
I found at an antique store a Sephiroth Figure from FFVII. Unfortunately, his head was missing >.< so the owner gave it to me for free and hopefully his head will turn up.
Then yesterday I managed to get two miniature collectibles of Susan and Lucy's gifts from the Chronicles of Narnia. I got those for free too because my mom ended up getting a whole bunch of fabric/something which I can't remember the name of.
So yeah it was pretty awesome.

Re: Yard Sales
I don't know the Narnia stuff, but lol faceless Sephiroth. Kinda reminds me of a free x-men figure I got at a big yardsale. This old man was selling all sorts of toys, but gave me a very old vintage Cyclops for free. Had something to do with his laser or arms not working, I forget. This was years ago when I was real young, so that toy was probably made in the early 80's.
I don't think his head is going to turn up. If it's in that consignment shop, you know it's probably way behind a bunch of furniture or crap.

Re: Yard Sales
well we're also thinking maybe his head was never there to begin with. but the person (i believe) keeps bringing in more stuff so maybe his head will turn up eventually XD
whatever it was for free anyway so if i get his head, it's a bonus. his sword's missing too but i can live without that.
