Re: Randomness Core
Regarding the book I just purchased, I wanted to share a quote from it. It's just too funny not to.
The Unit I portray are basically the true military of the time, not volunteers. They managed to only pull out a few companies, which were stationed all over in different places of the west, in time for the beginning of the war.
"Around midnight at Centreville someone fired a musket precipitating a false alarm. The Regulars knew it as such and kept to their bedrolls, but not the volunteers who rose in blind panic to face an imaginary foe believe to be bearing down on their camps. The campground promptly became a shooting gallery. One regiment actually formed a line of battle, marched to a nearby woods, and industriously fired three volleys into the trees, no doubt keeping the Union safe from woodland creatures."
This was before the actual first battle, so they were getting nervous, but it's still slightly humorous.

Re: Randomness Core
In their defense, when it's dark, it's often hard to determine. The Confederates actually shot their own General, Stonewall Jackson, this way. He was doing a late reconnaissance or briefing of the battle they were in. So when he came back to camp at night, galloping with several other cavalry, some guards posted thought the Union Calvary were trying to get the edge on them.
Or in WW2 (not sure if this is true or not) but a reenactor I know claims it to be (long dead) Anyway their company was positioned in some beach overseas. At night there was some sort of huge crab mating, where a bunch of them came on shore.
Some soldiers positioned closer to the shore were pinched by them. Aggravated they started shooting at them and then their whole company began to return fire on the crabs, thinking their was some sort of enemy attack.

For the record: I'm going to be a tad bit busy I have a feeling for a good number of days. We're babysitting a puppy and she's kind of all over the place and when I'm alone she can be a handful.

Re: Randomness Core
Yeah, the person lives too far away. It's better for her to be here as opposed to her staying in her house and us driving there every day for 10 days.
You'd be surprised, a lot of people use dog-sitters. It's usually cheaper and then you don't have to bring your dog to a kennel when you go on vacation.

Re: Randomness Core
Yeah but then how do you let them out?
I mean, yeah, you can put a whole thing of cat food for a cat and the cat will just go in the litter box. That's what we do anyway. But it's not like this area is the safest place to leave your doggy door wide open while you're away. If you even have one of those.

Re: Randomness Core
My favorite superhero is Batman too, for the record we're not meant to be.
Anyway I'm really glad I bought that Civil War book, even if it was pricey. I learned so much vast information it's not even funny. I've only gotten to August 1862 within the time period of it, but it's so full of information.
The unit I portray was ordered to march from Harrison Landing (in Virgina) to Manassas. Once there got there, they were then ordered to backtrack because the enemy was predicted to arrive half way. Then they received word to head back to Manassas and so on.
This went on for 48 hours, without stopping. God were the Union Generals the dumbest.

and that's why the Confederates were victorious for a majority of the war. at least, from my memory.

Re: Randomness Core
That's what the school textbooks tell you anyway. I was just oversimplifying the information. The truth was that Porter who was commanding the battalion I portray (The Regular Division) and the General of the time John Pope, weren't on the friendliest of pages. There is reason to believe he was putting Porter's men through more labor then needed, because of their butting heads.
What school text books teach us about the Civil War is so dis-informative, it's disgusting. I mean sure I didn't know any better myself, when I was taught it in school. When I joined reenacting I learned so much.
There were just as many incompetent Confederate Generals as there were Union, and competent Union and Confederate. You don't hear much about Robert E Lee's disaster known as Pickett's Charge, but you sure the hell hear a lot about some botched task, from a lesser known Union General and battle.
Does ordering 6,000 men to charge across an open plain sound like a good plan? Now let's place a tight Union fortification, the extreme center, which is armed with enough men and cannons to push off an invasion. Over half of the Confederates were mowed by artillery before they even made it to the stonewalls.
Here's a good one. A confederate general by the name of Pillow, once had a line of fortifications built with the trench on the wrong side. Brilliant! Hey them yankees be charging the wrong side! No fair!
There was also the fact that the Union determined their victory by having extreme crushing defeats against the Confederacy (because they wanted to re-assimilate them into the Union) but the Confederates counted their victors by simply winning the ground and or fighting another day.
There's also the fact that Confederates would claim victory by owning the piece of land in the battle, but at such horrible costs.

I was taught Pickett's charge in school....just saying.
So basically, you should just write the textbooks then :p

Serious question right now: If zombies eat people and animals, why don't they just eat each other if there's no one around?

Because even Zombies like a fresh meal. Everyone knows that.

Re: Randomness Core
Yeah but that's like if you're trapped on an island with another person, would you eat the other person if you absolutely had to? why would the zombies bother waiting out for their next meal when they could just each other?
