(I mean the character, not the show)

I hope they don't make Korra too bratty or overbearing. It doesn't happen with a lot of female leads or mains, but I've noticed it does happen to some where they become snobby because they're the most powerful of the series or something.

I also find it stupid that all the other Avatars had to travel around the world to learn, but she does it from the comfort of her home, apparently by herself, and with little knowledge to go by. From what the first series told us, the elements, and they way they are handled aren't very similar, so it's not like she could just learn from water bending.

I mean Toph is an amazing earth bender, and even she had to learn from someone, the BadgerMoles. She started bending when she was a little girl, as shown in a short flashback clip in The Sun Warriors (is it?) I think it was explained that some time went on when she first met the BadgerMoles/training, to where she bent and knocked over a tiny rock.

I don't know, I'm still willing to give the series a try, but I'm tired of watching series where the leads are prodigies, Aang was a totally fresh change.

Korra's ability currently doesn't bother me but I would have to bring in the leaks to fully explain and I don't want to spoil it.

I will say though that Korra's waterbending looked weak compared to earthbending and firebending which leads me to believe that the one of the reasons Korra can firebend and earthbend so well is because it matches her overall personality. If you think about it, Aang learned airbending and waterbending first and it also appeared to be the quickest processes of the elements. And those two elements matched Aang's personality so it would make sense why he knows those the best.

I just don't want her to turn into a Goku, when he was a kid to. The average scene is basically like.

Bad guys do some things, Goku doesn't cower when everyone else does. Bad guys shoot gun and bullet directly into Goku's head/eye, all he does is rubs it and whines how it hurts. Then KaPow!

Rinse Repeat, it got really boring after the first half of the season.

And I understand what you're saying about the elements being spiritual and physical, but still don't you think she would need to learn or pick up from an Fire/Earth bender to do that?

It's like they're making an exception for her character when all the other Avatars had to learn from someone else and travel the world, but not her, and that's why I don't like it.

^ We don't know that every Avatar ever had to do that though. We just assume that's law because that's how Aang and Roku did it. We don't see if the other Avatars were aware they could bend other elements before they were told they were the Avatar. It's quite possible that's what happens with some Avatars.

because think about it, Katara (and I know this is a bad example since she's kind of a Mary Sue) didn't have any waterbenders in her village. Yet, she somehow managed to figure out she could bend water and had to teach herself until Aang came along. That leads me to believe someone can figure out they're a bender as a kid but wouldn't necessarily get the training or learn right away how to properly bend.

the show thus far has told us you have to master the elements in order, not necessarily learn how to bend them in order. there's a difference. Aang learned how to bend fire (though he wasn't the greatest at it) before he learned Earth for instance.

Right but even Katara could only move around a jiggly mass of water and splash water around. It wasn't until she learned more on her travels that she became experienced.

So even though she is a 'bad example', she still had to learn a lot from the masters, scrolls, and so on before she became good. Korra is doing this at like 5? How old is she there? She can't be any older then 7ish. Which is just kind of pushing it for my tastes.

katara knew a couple of moves other than just moving water around...she knew a whole 3 moves that Aang mastered in five minutes :p

Right, I guess I need to watch an entire episode until I determine if I like her character or not.

though i agree in the sense that i hope she isnt the type of character where she's more like a man than a woman and has to incorporate more feminine attributes as the story goes on.

this is also why i worry a little about Brave from Pixar. I just feel like both Korra and Brave are so far looking like they might go in that direction. which i dont think is necessarily a bad thing but i dont really like it 100 percent either.

It's used too often in our modern day now, to show that females can be empowered characters to. I don't mind that, but I'm just tired of seeing most mains (both male and female) being the unstoppable powerhorse of the show. That's why I loved the first Avatar, Aang wasn't like that at all.

Sure he mastered things easily, but his other characteristics made him likable and so I looked pass all of the super easy things he picked up. Plus each element he had to learn, he didn't do right away.

I also enjoyed his character because although he was the main, they focused on all the other characters just as much sometimes.

That is what Mike and Bryan and all the others need to learn from to make Korra just as great (although half the series is probably already finished) If it just focuses on Korra and that's it...meh.

I don't know, if they claim it's a mini series, they won't have as much time as ATLA did.

but then now you're just getting back to the debate of 'can they develop characters in a shorter amount of time'.

which, by the way, i saw the Wedding Singer musical and they managed to develop 5 characters in 2 hours. granted, they had songs to do it which is a much quicker way to get a point across but...they still did a decent amount of characters in a short amount of time. which leads me to think they can do Korra just fine.

whether they actually do or not still remains a mystery.

You know, I just saw a new post regarding Korra and I think this is a fair way to look at her character given the information we've gotten so far:

what if Korra is the character type that's an arrogant ass only is the female version of that? like, we have sherlock, L, House, the Doctor, etc. who are all brilliant in their respective fields yet are just flat out assholes towards everyone else and think they're better than everyone else. it's quite possible this is the type of character Korra might be since it's clear she's a prodigy at bending.

just something i thought id throw out there. this would also explain why im liking Korra so far because the arrogant ass is one of my favorite character types XD

^ that could explain why you dont like Korra so far lol.

for the record, the Doctor is not a complete asshole like Sherlock, just thought id clear his name :p

but Lee, if you dont like the arrogant ass character type, are you inadvertently saying you dont like me because im almost positive i have come across as the arrogant ass on a number of occasions. hence why i like the character type :p

Personally I don't know you away from this forum, so I can't say I've seen the way you talk to people, or the way you act and so on. I mean you don't strike me as the type and I've been cool with you.

If you talk down to people on a regular basis though, that's a different story. I really don't condone that sort of behavior. It's different when people deserve it and so forth though.

Just thought I'd share this but a pretty big fight has broken out on tumblr over Korra and whether or not she's a Mary Sue.

I said she might have mary sueish tendencies if you made an argument but the main person 'against' Korra compared her to Bella from Twilight. And I could not stand for that crap. There is no way she is like Bella.

Honestly I don't care what anyone says somewhere, even if I'm totally against it lol. Too many people in the world to try to debate, argue, or give your two cents/insight in.

She had MarySue qualities of course, but she's not full blown, never said that.

^ oh i know what your opinion is. im not implying you were on that 'side' of the argument per se.

i just thought id share what was going on since we had just finished this conversation. i actually got a response and kind of sort of debated it (i wasnt even expecting a response). the argument is that Korra is as one dimensional as Bella and that she is meant to be 'easily insert-able' where a woman can easily 'become' Korra by following her journey just as i said was the intention of Bella.

of course, i dont agree with that because i think its way too early to determine that kind of stuff. especially since all the clips and stuff released so far is from only the first episode or two. so obviously she's acting the same because she hasnt really changed yet....

but yeah, i know that wasnt your opinion, just sharing :D

Right there's always two opposite sides to an argument, which both have extremes. You can never actually converse or learn anything from either extreme side, so it's best to let them bark.
