Last Movie You Watched

Post  Lee on Mon Dec 12, 2011 6:41 pm

Saw this thread at another forum. Simple just say what movie you last saw and then add any comments you deem necessary. I recently saw Thor not too long ago. It was alright, but I didn't like how damn dark most of the night and fight scenes were. It almost felt like they made it so dark so that we couldn't notice the poor modeling, animation, or camera angles.

If I had turned off all the lights and ran around while swinging a bat it would've had the same effect. I also found it kind of stupid how when Thor had to leave the Earth girl acted like they had known each other for years. You only saw him for about a day, big deal.

I know that's to carter for the datecrazy teen girls and women, but I feel there's a way to get that kind of romance done effectively. Most movies seem to just shove it down our throats now. Like XMen for example. Cyclops and Jean had one, but the film didn't zoom onto them 24/7. Or like how Rogue and Wolverine had a big brother little sister relationship, it worked and wasn't overbearing.

I don't know if I'm going to see it. If I did it would only be because of others talking about it and I'm not sure I actually want to see it anyway.

Well I really liked it. But if you aren't a fan of musicals or the Muppets in general, I don't recommend it.

What just to start off the holiday experience/spirit? Or are you going out somewhere where it's being shown?

I watch Nightmare Before Christmas every year for Halloween and Christmas. I haven't done it yet for Christmas. I also usually watch Babes in Toyland at one point along with the Charlie Brown Christmas special. I missed Charlie Brown though (probably watch it online or something) and I don't know where my Babes in Toyland is.

Young Sherlock I just borrowed from the library for some reason :p

I hardly ever watched any Christmas movies during the holiday. I did watch Nightmare Before Christmas last year or the year before that, but that's not really a Christmas movie, more like an Halloween one.

And Nightmare is a Christmas movie AND a Halloween movie. That's why I watch it for both :D

It's more like a haunted version of Christmas. I mean, Halloween is over five minutes into the movie. The rest of it is about Christmas.

Christmas Story is a big one. I'm surprised you havent seen that. It's on 24/7 on christmas (literally)

Anyway, a movie that I finished recently was called the Tree of Life. And I seriously don't recommend this movie. It's one of those movies where I feel the director is shoving in your face "look these images MEAN something! I'm making a work of ART so you should pay attention". I mean, there's no linear narrative and there is a segment that goes through the evolution of life for a good half hour. my god, it was boring. And, the thing is, I feel as though there are other movies that have done something similar but have done it much better like Fantasia and Adaptation.

In fact, I feel as if everything Tree of Life is trying to convey has been done better especially in anime. Because the one main thing Tree of Life tries to convey is the idea of everything being connected, that time is illusion, etc. And the Swamp episode of Avatar got this message through in a half hour what Tree of Life takes 2 + hours to do.

the end.

But in the swamp episode, Hu spelled it out for everyone, literally. This movie you're talking about was probably a silent film, or didn't use dialogue in the narration.

Re: Last Movie You Watched

Post  Loyal Subject on Sun Dec 18, 2011 11:26 pm

No, there was dialogue. Not a lot of dialogue but there was dialogue. And the dialogue that was related to the film was said at the very beginning i.e. the person talking practically spelled it out just as Hu did. Only it was said slightly more poetically than how Hu said it. But it was still spelled out early on and the movie still could have been shorter. And I only mentioned Avatar as an example because that's the only show that I know you've seen. FMA does it in one episode, Avatar the movie does it, Lion King does it, hell, Pocahontas gets the point across in 3 minutes in one song.

And that isn't even the only issue. the only narrative part centers around a son of a family with 3 kids that dies when he's 19. but we never know how he died and the film only follows the kids when they're kids. it never goes into when he's older. plus, there's hardly any exposition at all so half the time when the kids are kids, i had no idea who was who. i didnt know who was the kid that died was and who the main character was. i only figured it out because i read the back of the DVD case. and honestly, i didnt spend enough time with the family to really care what happened by the end of it. Because most of it was well shot images that were supposed to be metaphors and because we only get snip its of their lives, i frankly didn't care about them or what happened.

To be fair, I'm not a fan of 'artsy' or abstract films to begin with. But I think I would have liked the movie had it not been so damn long and didn't have evolution taking up 30 minutes or however long it was. I dont need 30 plus minutes of this to get what you're trying to say. And, AND almost all the dialogue of the beginning was just the woman repeating the same thing over and over again like I didn't understand or hear her the first time she said it.
